Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!  Nintendo of America;Nintendo;Hyundai (Nintendo of America)1987"Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream" was the result of Nintendo's not renewing their license to use Mike Tyson's name shortly after he was incarcerated.***

[52]***"Mike Tyson's Punch-Out" is a favorite amongst NES gamers. Boxing games are not my favorite type of games, but Punch-Out is indeed a rather good game. Mostly because it is so different from all the other boxing games of the era, which consisted mostly of stupid button-mashing viewing the boxers from a side-view perspective. Not only is the perspective different in Punch-Out, your opponents also require the right tactics to be defeated. The opponents are very different in that regard. Once you know the right tactic it is a matter of skill to execute the right actions in the right moment. And that works pretty well I must admit. In combination with nice graphics and huge, animated boxer sprites it is an enjoyable product.***It's a right jab, a left hook, an uppercut-it's Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! where you'll get the chance to compete against boxers from around the globe. Punch your way through thirteen bouts in the minor, major and world circuits against tough contenders like Piston Honda, Glass Joe, Super Macho Man and many many more. Defeat all your opponents and meet the ultimate challenge against the World Heavyweight Champion Mike Tyson in the greatest fight of all-The Dream Bout! Knockout Tyson and you can become WVBA (World Video Boxing Association) Champ.***Several factors lead to two versions of this game. Mike Tyson sued Nintendo for making his character beatable. The contract with Mike Tyson to use his name and likeness was for three years. It expired and was not renewed. The game was still profitable, so Nintendo opted to keep selling it as a rebranded product.

It is commonly repeated that Mike Tyson's criminal conviction was a deciding factor in the rebranding of this game. I myself am guilty of helping spread this rumor. Turns out Tyson had been arrested 38 times previous before Nintendo chose to seek his endorsement. More importantly, the incident for which Mike Tyson was arrested and the trial and conviction for it, took place in 1991. After the rebranded Punch-Out was published in 1990.***The Japanese version originally featured Super Macho Man. Only the USA version featured Mike Tyson. Shortly after release, Tyson's popularity began growing in Japan so the original Japanese version was discontinued and the Japanese market also got Mike Tyson's Punch-out!!. The early Japanese version without Tyson is a distinctive gold color.***You are little Mac and you have to fight your way through the WVBA. Your goal is to fight your way into the dream bout with Mr. Ear-Biter himself, Mike Tyson. After three years, Nintendo was forced to drop Tyson's name from the game after he sued them for making his character beatable! Tyson claimed, at the time, that he could not be beaten! TRUE STORY! I wonder what Evander Holyfield thinks about that?***The NES version of Punch-Out!! uses a combination of characters from arcade games Punch-Out!! and Super Punch-Out!!, plus some new ones. Although the gameplay is essentially the same and the graphics are inferior to the arcade versions, many (including myself) would agree that the extra touches in the NES game make it far more entertaining and memorable than the other two.

Jumbo Ozaki no Hole in One Professional  HAL Laboratory1988"Jumbo Ozaki no Hole in One Professional" is another one of those many top-down golf games for the NES/Famicom. There are two 18-hole courses and several game modes from single play to tournament. Nothing really outstanding technically and gameplay-wise. The only new, or I should better say, irritating element is the odd swing mechanic. On the one hand it resembles the standard method of two-click swings, but on the other hand there is no visible bar or pointer showing where exactly the current position of the swing is. You have to look on the golfer animation to get a rudimentary view of where your click will activate the swing bar. I wonder why they made it so difficult. After a while you get used to it, because you get a better feel how long it takes between clicks, but it is irritating at first and just not necessary, because I can't see any advantage over the normal "visible" swing mechanics. labelimageminimize

Michael Andretti's World Grand Prix  American Sammy;Kemco;Varie (Human)1988Superstar Michael Andretti personally guides you through the perilous and exciting world of Grand Prix Racing! Four of the most powerful racing machines are your to command on 16 famous international Grand Prix courses from around the globe! Hone your driving skills or challenge the best - it's all up to you in this amazing simulation of Formula One racing!***Nakajima Satoru F1 Hero published by Kemco 1988-12-09 in Japan
Michael Andretti's World GP published by American Sammy 1990-06 in USA
Colin McRae Rally published 1992 in Europe

I have not played the Nakajima Satoru F1 Hero or Colin McRae Rally variants so I cannot be sure of the details of those games. But the Andretti and McRae versions are essentially just re-themed variants of the Satoru game. I'm guessing that few (or none) tracks and cars are common to all of them.

The Michael Andretti version is a fictional mixture of Formula 1 and CART racing and stars Michael Andretti (who had never driven an F1 car in 1988) . It includes Michael Andretti's Chevy Lola (CART), a Honda V-10 F1, a Ferrari V-12 F1, and a Mugen V-8 F1. It takes place on all the1988 F1 courses except Phoenix which is anachronistically replaced by Detroit. In reality, Michael Andretti had never won a race at any of these tracks but would win a race in 1990 at Detroit. He never even raced at 7 of the tracks, before or since this game. Like many racing games of its day it fairly accurately reproduces the 2D layout of real tracks but not the elevations or banks. Also the scenery, which sometimes is an important element of racing (the lighting difficult tunnel at Monaco, or the corner blinding baseball stadium at Suzuka, for instances), is only vaguely represented by an image on the horizon.

Control is unique in that turns are not preformed by holding the direction, but rather taping it to instantly rotate the car into one of seven predetermined turn radius positions. Gas is A, Brake is B, A+B will maintain speed, Start pauses, Select aborts, A and B cycle through menu choices. There are practice and two player verses options in addition to the main game. Players can take up to five qualifying laps to get a best time. Tire wear is a factor during qualifying. The player may pit and the time will count in that lap. Pressing select will end participation in the current phase of the current event. It is impossible to collide with opponents' cars. Placing in a race scores 1 for 4th place, 2 for 3rd, 3 for 2nd, and 5 for 1st.

The players of the Michael Andretti version can choose the following personalities as their driver/character and have little choice when it comes to racing against them.:

John Elway's Quarterback Tradewest (Rare)1989John Elway's QUARTERBACK is the home video game you've been waiting for. So real you can see the game like a quarterback does, from the line of scrimmage. You call the plays, you throw the passes, run the ball, and make the tackles. It's third down and a long four long yards to the first down that will stop the clock. No time-outs left. The weak side linebacker is lined up inside his defensive end. They're coming! You check-off the play at the line of scrimmage and call for a quick pass to the tight end. He breaks it for a T.D.! Named for the quarterback who twice won the AFC Player of the Year Award, this is the game made for every kid who ever wanted to play the game as well as John Elway! labelimagesubject

Jack Nicklaus' Greatest 18 Holes of Major Championship Golf Konami1990Hackers beware! You're about to tee off on a course so challenging that it would've had history's greatest golfers trembling in their knickers. Handpicked by the master himself, 18 of the greatest holes in golf have now been linked together, including the 14th at St. Andrews, 18th at Muirfield, and 12th at Royal Lytham. All the elements of the major championships are here as well - the harsh winds of Scotland, the lightning fast greens of Augusta, Oakmont's death traps and the great ocean hazard at Pebble Beach. Trees are everywhere. Birdies are few. And it has more doglegs than a kennel. Even pin placements change from round to round, making double bogeys as common as pars. Up to a foursome can compete, or you can go it alone against a computerized Golden Bear. You also have the option of playing a skins game or stroke play. So get a grip on yourself. Then swing into action on a course as legendary as the man who designed it.***

1 player, 2 players, 3 players, or 4 players simultaneous.

Based on the arcade game. The arcade game was limited to 3 human players and a computer player. In this version, there are always 4 trucks racing and all of them can be human players. The players race around stadium tracks full of obstacles that simulate off-road conditions. Nitros (1-5 each) and money ($10k-$40k each) appear on the course. Players also earn cash for placing. In between races, each player can upgrade their acceleration, suspension, top speed, tires, and stock up on nitros. Coming in last results in a game over, once you've passed race 15. Every track fits on the screen and there is no scrolling. The view is vaguely dimetric 3D. Obstacles do slow down the trucks and in rare cases can even cause an explode if the crash is violent enough.
